Course Content

Essentially, the Distance Learning courses are composed of comprehensive notes, which follow the syllabus requirements of the professional qualifications.  The material guides students through their chosen course, defining and explaining the concepts and procedures of international trade.

All courses contain self-assessment tests at the end of most units, which enable students to determine how they are progressing.  In addition, The Institute provides advice on how to approach subjects and suggests essential reading.

The course material can be supplied in hard copy, CD-ROM or online format.  There is no difference in content between the formats. However, the CD-ROM or online option allows more flexibility of access.

Full or self tuition

The Institute of Export delivers full or self-tuition distance learning courses for each of the professional qualifications.

Students who enrol on the full tuition route have access to a tutor for each of the modules.  Students are able to submit assignments for marking and informative feedback, which helps identify where they may need to target further study and revision.  Tutors are also available, by phone or e-mail, to answer enquiries related to the syllabus, provide explanations and further reading.

All of the tutors who are contracted to provide tutor support for the Distance Learning courses are selected by the Institute’s Development and Training Working Party.  All of our tutors have experience in tutoring students within an educational setting and many have a supporting qualification.  In addition, all of our tutors have worked or are working within the International Trade arena.

Students who enroll on the self tuition route do not have access to the tutors and therefore proceed through the material on their own, using the assignment questions and specimen answers to self assess how they are progressing.  The study material also contains activities and self-assessment questions for students to determine their strengths and weaknesses.

Studying the course

It is for the student to decide whether to study one module at a time or the whole course simultaneously.  At the beginning of the course when filling in the Distance Learning Enrolment form, you are asked to suggest possible exam dates for each of the modules.

This information is your statement of intention only, to make the most of study we suggest you set yourself a Programme of Study. A template can be provided for Full Tuition students which will help students structure their assignments, but the Programme of Study is flexible and can be reviewed at any time.

Self-Tuition students are not provided with the programme of study, as they do not have the benefit of submitting assignments to tutors.

Enrolment

There is no academic year for Distance Learning students so you can start studying at any time, bearing the examination dates in mind.  All you need to do is complete the Distance Learning Enrolment and Student Registration forms.  The Institute will then check that you meet the pre-requisites of the course you wish to study and raise an invoice for the appropriate fees.

If you wish to study through Distance Learning with the Institute of Export please complete both student registration and distance learning enrolment forms and return them for the attention of Holly Stewart, Institute of Export, Export House, Minvera Business Park, Lynch Wood, Peterborough, PE2 6FT.

If you are enrolling with an approved provider the distance learning form would not be required. The student registration form may be returned for the attention of Melanie Hurcombe and enrolment would be completed with the approved provider. There is a list available to download under the section Professional Qualifications > page 'For Students'.
